FABIENNE BONGARD-MOSE
8 Sundays, from October 14 to December 2
Class: 8:00-9:30 pm  Practica: 9:30-10:00 pm

About:
  Fabienne became fascinated with tango in 1991, and in her travels to Buenos Aires studied with Pepito, Petaca, and Manolo, all kings of Milonga dancing. There , she also trained with Gustavo Naveira and Fabian Salas.

In 1996, Fabienne co-founded the all women's tango troupe" Tango Mujer" which has played to sold out audiences around the country and in Europe.

While in New York, Fabienne taught at Dance Manhattan the studio which boasts New York's most comprehensive tango program. There, she collaborated with Eric Jorissen, Daniel Trenner, Pablo Pugliese, Brigitta Winkler and Rebecca Shulman.

Description:
  Tango is a social dance originating from Argentina which emphasizes improvisation and a strong connection between leader & follower.

This series will teach students the basic elements of tango: the embrace, walking, ochos (crosses) & giros (turns), and introduce the endless possibilities that come about from combining these elements and interpreting the music.

The curriculum is designed to nurture the beginning dancer and inspire creativity and harmony on the social dance floor. Some of the material that will be covered will include: salidas, forward and backward ochos, simple alterations, classic and not so classic paradas, parallel and cross-foot walks, and different ways of switching systems. Throughout the course special emphasis will be put on improvisation, floor craft, musicality, balance and keeping a light heart.

Cost:
  FREE for Caltech Undergrad & Grad students (with ID);
$5/class or $35/series for Caltech affiliates & other university students* (with ID);
$8/class or $56/series regular.

* Discounts apply for full-time students from any college/university/institution. Please bring a current student ID.
** Series price paid in whole on the first day of class.
Notes:

NO dance experience or partner necessary.

Tango is danced in close position with figures that require a lot of pivoting on the balls of your feet. As such, it is ideal for beginners to wear close-toed shoes with smooth bottoms -- suede or leather is ideal, hard rubber is ok. Most ladies wear heels -- if you do so, make sure to choose a pair with straps so that the heel is NOT loose, this will aid in your pivots.

About:
  A review of giros and changes of direction for more advanced dancers, back sacadas for both ladies and gentlemen, enrosques, reverse barridas and colgadas.

We will concentrate heavily on technique and proper execution for each element, rather than focusing on steps (the steps are a tool to teach people to better understand the mechanics of the dance, so they can gain more confidence more quickly). Then at the end we will work on combinations and sequences with these elements.

About:
  Milonga along with Vals and Tango make up the triad of music and dance forms of Argentine Tango. Set to a lively 2/4 tempo music, milonga uses the same basic elements as tango, though the movement is more accented and upbeat. It is rather a kind of rhythmic walking without the complicated figures of tango.
